Special Effects

Inspired by the digital imaging magazine 'Digital PHOTO'.

Based on the video lesson on Digital PHOTO's CD-ROM, titled 'Photoshop Special Effects'.

Kneeling next to the garden wall, two shots were taken directly above the model reaching up

towards the camera. We felt that the left hand shot had the best facial expression whilst the

right hand shot contained the best hand position reaching out.

A combination of both photos were used with the wonderfully supplied image from Digital PHOTO

and composited in Adobe Photoshop. With the help of Ben Turner and Mat Gallagher's video

instruction, we finished up with the following image.

Special Effects Example 2

Based on Digital PHOTO's CD-ROM, titled

'Add Hollywood Special Effects'.

Jon Adams took us step by step through Digital PHOTOS CD-ROM video tutorial based on the above

background image. We wanted to personalise the finished project by adding ourselves to the scene.

The shot was discussed, planned and two photos were taken down at the local park.

Two other images were supplied by Digital PHOTO

The rotors were added to the Helicopter using the image on the right and both composited

onto the background. The chasing green helicopter was a duplicate of the first and various

treatments were added to give the appearance of motion.

Our two photos were added to the shot, along with the missiles to finish an all action photograph.

Directed and acted by Bronya Greatrex and photo-retouching by Tristan Greatrex and Digital PHOTO.

LIVE Music

The brief was to create a series of live band photographs of rock band UFO.

Mark L. Potts provided me with a series of individual photos taken on the bands UK tour at Wolverhampton Civic Hall - 20th June 2004.

As always, the greatest headache working with all live music photographic images is in the matching of the colour and hue due to the spotlight lighting.
It is impossible to ensure that these lights are consistent. Here are some of the production steps used to create the finished photos:

First Photo supplied was of guitarist Vinnie Moore.
A great action shot that was digitally enhanced.

Secondly, the main band photo of bassist Pete Way, drummer Jason Bonham and vocalist Phil Mogg

Notice the colour lighting difference between the first and second photos.
Vinnie Moore having blue and

green lights as the backdrop.

Finally the picture of Paul Raymond. A much darker photo.

As well as enhancing and blending the colours, the background lights were added..

Again three photos were supplied, each with different colour casts and backgrounds

First Photograph supplied without two of the band members

Vinnie Moore - Dark background
Busy background - note the drumkit

The final composition

The final composition - The guitarist, Vinnie is placed in front of Phil Mogg (second from right).

Phil is positioned stage left allowing a great view of Jason Bonham on drums.

Vinnie and Phil have a blended background to match the stage lights of the first photo.

Vinnie Moore, UFO guitarist

Original Photograph.

BEFORE...
... and AFTER

The Marshall Amplifier was added behind Vinnie Moore to give this shot a real guitarist feel.

A red hue to reflect the lighting was added to the amps to tie in with the stage lighting.

A subtle shadow is thrown from the guitarist onto the Marshall stack giving an authentic

feel and at the same time adds depth to the photo. So here is the finished photo in all its glory:
