Track List 01 RUSH - 2112: Overture/The Temples Of Syrinx 02 MOTÖRHEAD - Limb From Limb Original Motörhead guitarslinger Fast 'Eddie' Clarke made his mark with the band on their first four records. The original Motörhead were creators of an aggressive, gutsy anti-social grind. Produced by Jimmy Miller (of Rolling Stones fame), the band's second album primarily focused on what was to be the classic 'head sound. A lethal combination of traditional Hard Rock, punk and charismatic, no-frills rock 'n' roll. www.imotorhead.com 03 RICHIE SAMBORA/BRUCE FOSTER - Southern Belle 04 DIAMOND HEAD - Am I Evil? (Live) A true bone-crunchingly classic riff from the hands of guitarist Brian Tatler. When Diamond Head hit the rock scene in the early 1980s they were hailed as the new Led Zeppelin. The seminal 'Am I Evil?' went on to be a true rock anthem in the ‘90s when rock giants Metallica took the bull by the horns and paid tribute to their musical heroes, frequently including it in their live set and laying it down on tape on their 1998 covers album 'Garage Inc.'. www.diamond-head.net 05 DIO - As Long As It's Not About Love Considered one of the best singers in rock, former Rainbow/Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio has recorded with some of the greatest guitarmen in rock (Ritchie Blackmore and Toni Iommi to name but two). Craig Goldie is no exception. Having taken on the illustrious Heavy Metal gauntlet laid down by the former on early Dio releases, he reappeared with his mentor on the singer's 2000 conceptual masterpiece 'Magica', ably reaffirming his rock 'n' roll credentials. www.ronniejamesdio.com 06 SAVATAGE - Jesus Saves 07 PAUL KOSSOFF - Molten Gold (Live) An extremely talented musician whose life was duly cut short by a drug-related death, Free/Back Street Crawler guitar legend Paul Kossoff is up there with the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Showcasing a fluid, bluesy melodic lead he drove Free to superstardom in the early 1970s before forming his own full-time solo outfit featuring a number of his former bandmates as well as renowned Yes drummer Alan White. www.allrightnow.com 08 BERNIE MARSDEN - Love That Burns Something of a musical journeyman, former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden played heavily on the blues back in the early 1980s when he made a mark for himself in the early incarnation of David Coverdale's hard rockin' heroes, before turning his hand to fronting his own band, Alaska. In more recent years he's settled down, exploring a reflective rootsy blues-based direction with a batch of superb solo albums showcasing his own superior guitar-work. www.berniemarsden.com 09 JEFF HEALEY BAND - The Damage Is Done Canadian Jeff Healey has successfully bridged the dividing line between traditional blues purism and the commercial AOR appeal of stadium rock. Currently combining a classic jazz finesse with his trademark cutting style of hammering rhythm 'n' blues this particular master of the Fender Strat continues to bend the strings in differing directions, demonstrating an uncanny instrumental prowess. www.jeffhealey.com 10 JOHN NORUM - Solitude Swedish guitarist John Norum contributed a major part to the worldwide success of Scandinavian rockers Europe. Following his initial departure from the group in the late 1980s he worked with some of the biggest names in rock (Don Dokken and Glenn Hughes to name but a few). After numerous solo releases (including his latest offering 'Optimus') in 2004 he got back together with his ex bandmates for a reunion album and successful world tour. www.johnnorum.com 11 SANTANA - Gypsy/Grajonca The supreme master of instrumental Latino rock guitar, Mexican-born Carlos Santana has been doin' the business with his own band, Santana, since the heady days of the Woodstock Festival in the late 1960s. Effortlessly fusing melodic soul and sheer technical sass he continues to be an accomplished performer who has constantly refreshed himself by collaborating with some of the biggest names in contemporary rock and pop. www.santana.com 12 LESLIE WEST - Woman Long Islander Leslie West came to prominence as the lead guitarist of hard rock outfit Mountain in the early 1970s on the back of the classic 'Nantucket Sleighride' album. But the group failed to deliver commercially, leaving West to embark on a lengthy solo career (during which he hooked up with Cream bassist Jack Bruce). Most recent offerings have shown that his tuneful style and rock solid approach have barely changed over the years. www.mountaintheband.com 13 VINNIE MOORE The Maze Establishing himself as one of the most important guitarmen to emerge from the virtuoso instrumentalist school of rock of the mid 1980s, Vinnie Moore has, to date, issued a number of hard hitting studio albums (as well as more recently treading the boards with Brit hard rock legends UFO). 1999's 'Maze' record (with its lengthy title track) showcased a return to the neo-classical roots that essentially defined this particular rock genre. www.vinniemoore.com CD 2 01 RAINBOW - Stargazer Ex Deep Purple member Ritchie Blackmore once declared himself 'God'!. For those who caught his own band, Rainbow, live in the late 1970s (with Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums) that claim was indisputable. Set against a fantastical backdrop of fire-breathing dragons and demonic wizards the epic 'Stargazer' (lifted from arguably the best ever hard rock record) featured the man in black at his peak. www.blackmoresnight.com 02 MAGNUM - Two Hearts Six-string songsmith Tony Clarkin provided (and still provides) the heart of the Magnum sound alongside long-time partner-in-rhyme Bob Catley. The home-grown Birmingham rockers first hit the scene in the mid-1970s but it wasn't until 1985 with the release of the benchmark 'On A Storyteller's Night' album that they finally hit the big time, both critically and commercially. The success of the album went a long way to landing the band a major label deal with Polydor Records. www.magnumonline.co.uk 03 GARY MOORE - Parisienne Walkways 04 TEMPEST - Turn Around Only in existence between 1972 to 1974, Tempest released just two albums (1973's 'Tempest' and 1974's 'Living In Fear') but featured the cream of British prog/jazz rock. Individual band members Allan Holdsworth, Mick Clarke, Ollie Halsall, Jon Hiseman and Paul Williams would go on to influence the likes of Eighties Metal stringers like Eddie Van Halen and 'nu-metal' Prog rock superstars like Dream Theater. www.therealallanholdsworth.com 05 JETHRO TULL - Aqualung (Live) Despite always living in the shadow of Mick Abrahams (Tull's formative guitar henchman) Martin Barre performed on the group's definitive early album releases (1971's 'Aqualung' opus making the boldest statement). As the veteran group's lead man in partnership with flute wielding singer Ian Anderson, since 1969, his playing has provided Jethro Tull with the brazen energy to continually deliver on record and on stage for well over 30 years. 06 COMPANY OF SNAKES - Lovehunter (Live) An integral part of the inaugural 'definitive' line-up of David Coverdale's Whitesnake, slide guitarman Micky Moody provided the backbone to the band's early blues sound. Re-uniting again with partner Bernie Marsden in 1999 as Company Of Snakes alongside vocalist Stefan Bergren, keyboardist Don Airey and drummer John Lingwood the ensuing live album 'Here They Go Again' set out to capture the blues spirit of the early classic 'snake sound. www.classicwhitesnake.com 07 PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP - Albatross Regarded by many as the greatest white blues guitarist ever, former Fleetwood Mac man Peter Green has had something of a turbulent career, riddled by drug abuse and paranoia. Initially hanging up his guitar in the mid 1970s (rumours abound that he worked as a hospital orderly, bartender and gravedigger during this time) he eventually got his head back together and came out of the closet in the early 1990s, resurrecting many of his early blues rock classics. www.fleetwoodmac.net 08 ULI JON ROTH - Burning Wheels Turning As part of the early incarnation of German Metal giants The Scorpions during the 1970s, lead guitarist Uli Jon Roth ultimately laid the groundwork for the neo-classical Metal sound. Upon leaving the group in 1978 the classically refined Roth began a rather erratic solo career that saw him expand his style in a more progressive direction with his own band Electric Sun, a psychedelic power trio fashioned around the image of his idol, Jimi Hendrix. www.ulijonroth.com 09 NAZARETH - Hair Of The Dog 10 MARTY FRIEDMAN - Lust For Life Former Megadeth lead guitarist Marty Friedman made his name with the thrash icons during their biggest period of popularity in the early 1990s. Despite not having the same elusive commercial profile as Metallica's Kirk Hammett, Friedman (who is a big fan of ethnic and new age music) has endeavoured to pursue a successful solo career as an outlet for prog-inspired six string experimentation rather than over the top Metallic excess. www.martyfriedman.com 11 PAT TRAVERS - How Many More Times Canadian blues/rock guitarist Pat Travers paid his dues by playing in bar bands around Quebec. Heading over to the UK he signed to Polydor and soon became a firm live favourite at the Reading Festival on the back of his 1976 debut. By 1979 he'd hit the big time in the US with the new Travers Band (featuring Tommy Aldridge on the skins and co-guitarist Pat Thrall) a lethal combination that has its modern day successor in today's Pat Travers Power Trio. www.pattravers.com 12 PAUL GILBERT - I Am Satan A guitar hero incapable of taking himself too seriously, former Racer X/Mr. Big Metal guitar virtuoso Paul Gilbert, a prodigy of the Los Angeles Guitar Institute Of Technology, is now an established solo artist with an especially huge following in Japan. Firmly putting the emphasis on solid songwriting, recent releases such as 2002's 'Burning Organ' display a talent for creative restraint unlike most of his contemporaries in the shredding commune. www.paulgilbert.com 13 OLIVER-DAWSON SAXON - The Eagle Has Landed (Live) CD 3 01 LYNYRD SKYNYRD - Free Bird The definitive Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd were, and still are, a law unto themselves. Guitarist Gary Rossington (who originally began his musical career as a drummer) one of the group's founding (and surviving members following a tragic plane crash that killed most of the band in 1977) epitomised their boozy, barroom-brawling attitude. Their self-titled debut album was raw, totally uncompromising and contained one of the most popular rock classics ever laid to tape. www.lynyrdskynyrd.com 02 ROBIN GEORGE - Heartline After a touring stint with vintage Brit rockers Magnum, British guitar pin-up Robin George was lauded in the press as the UK's answer to Billy Squier. Tipping his hat to artists like Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams, his 1984 debut solo album 'Dangerous Music' was a class effort filled to the brim with some superb musicianship, especially Pino Pallidino's bass playing. It produced the single 'Heartline', a firm rock club anthem. www.robingeorge.co.uk 03 PETER FRAMPTON - Baby I Love Your Way (Live) One of the biggest arena rock stars of all-time, former Humble Pie singer/guitarman Peter Frampton already had an illustrious musical pedigree before he went solo in the mid-‘70s. Originally lifted from one of the biggest selling live rock records of all time (1976's 'Frampton Comes Alive!') this classic cut elevated him to superstar status. Two decades on, Frampton decided to ‘come alive' once again thanks to a stirring 75 minute set recorded at Detroit's Pine Knob Music Theatre. www.frampton.com 04 THUNDER - Love Walked In (Live) 05 YNGWIE MALMSTEEN - Mistreated 06 BIG JIM SULLIVAN - Stairway To Heaven Big Jim Sullivan is reputedly the most sought-after session guitarist in Britain, with a list of 1000 chart entries to his name (including The Kinks 'You Really Got Me'). He is also allegedly credited with being the first musician to have ever used a fuzzbox in the UK, while accompanying P.J. Proby. On 'Mr. Rock Guitar' Sullivan covers a host of killer tunes from such rock luminaries as Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Free and, of course, Led Zeppelin. www.bigjimsullivan.com 07 IMPELLITTERI - End Of The World High-speed neo classical six stringer Chris Impellitteri is, in technical terms, one of the very best. With a style somewhat reminiscent of Scandinavian guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen, he (like his illustrious Swedish counterpart) first came to prominence working with former Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet in 1987. Still a largely self-financed underground guitar virtuoso, Impellitteri still plies his magic, conjuring up well-crafted traditional power Metal. www.rapture.net/impellitteri 08 MARILLION - Easter (Live) Much underrated guitarman Steve Rothery has trodden the boards with Marillion since their 1979 inception in a pub in Aylesbury, UK. When enigmatic frontman Fish left the group in 1988 it looked like the writing was on the wall. Hooking up with new vocalist Steve Hogarth gave the nu-proggers a new lease of life and resulted in the recording of 1989's ambitious 'Seasons End', which pushed Rothery's guitarwork to the fore, especially on the melodically crafted 'Easter'. www.marillion.com 09 MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP - Doctor Doctor 10 UFO Lights Out (New Version) Vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way and drummer Andy Parker formed veteran Brit rockers UFO in 1969. Originally known as Hocus Pocus, the group which took its name in honour of a London club, went through a myriad line-up changes following the departure of Michael Schenker in the late 1970s. Guitarmen Paul Chapman, Atomic Tommy and Lawrence Archer followed suit, filling the legendary axeman's shoes. www.ufo-music.info 11 URIAH HEEP - Gypsy Guitar wizard Mick Box, the 'Cheshire Cat' of rock, has stayed true to his rock 'n' roll roots for over 30 years. Uriah Heep's brand of traditional Heavy Metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early 1970s. Formed by Box and vocalist David Byron in the late 1960s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades (nearly 30 different musicians have passed through the band's ranks over the years). 12 DEEP PURPLE - Take It Off The Top (Live) Until he replaced 'moody' guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore as Deep Purple's lead guitarist in 1996, Steve Morse was very much an underground attraction with a healthy following among other guitar players. However, when the remaining original DP Mk 2 members (Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice) recruited the ex Dixie Dregger to the fold, he immediately gave the veteran hard rockers a much needed new spark, which has since resulted in a host of hard-hitting studio and live albums. www.deep-purple.com 13 STEVE HOWE - To Be Over What more can be said about Yesman Steve Howe? With numerous solo releases under his belt he has also worked with artists as diverse as Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Lou Reed and Fish, among others. A pioneering, pivotal figure in the history of classic rock, Howe literally wrote the rulebook for progressive rock guitar, as exemplified by this reverential re-working of a classic Yes track (which originally appeared on 1974's 'Relayer' album). www.stevehowe.com ---
CLASSIC AXE Sony TV - 2002 1. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
More Essential Rock Anthems MORE ESSENTIAL ROCK ANTHEMS pulls together some of the biggest and best known names in Rock, (Black Sabbath, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep, Motorhead, Anthrax, Nazareth, Alice Cooper, Venom to name but a few) and put together a hit-filled package of Rock Anthems in one handy 2CD set. Track List
1. RAINBOW Guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore once declared himself 'God'. For those who caught Rainbow 'live' in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the fact was indisputable'. By 1979 the group had shaken off their 'dungeons and dragons' image and adopted more 'commercial' attire with the 2. URIAH HEEP Uriah Heep's fourth opus 'Demons And Wizards' (regarded by many fans as their best record) threw up several Heep classics, most notably the anthemic 'Easy Livin', a punchy rock 'n' roll dream, tailor-made for lead singer David Byron's extrovert showmanship. It dented charts 3. YES Recorded quickly to capitalise on the group's 1996 'classic' re-union gigs 'Open Your Eyes' was a return to form for Yes as they re-grouped with legendary guitarist Steve Howe. A guitar-based affair it successfully attempted a cross over between the indulgences of Seventies Yes music and the more commercial aspects of the Eighties band. The lead cut 'Open Your Eyes' features former Toto member Steve Porcaro on keyboards. 4. BLACK SABBATH When Ozzy Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1979 it seemed the writing was on the wall. However, the band regrouped with former Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio and delivered 'Heaven And Hell' one of the best hard rock albums ever. Reborn and re-energised it served up a host of Sabbath classics in the shape of 'Neon Knights', 'Heaven & Hell' and the moody rock epic 'Children Of The Sea'. 5. NAZARETH The definitive title track of the group's groundbreaking third album 'Razamanaz'. Despite having already issued two records it was only with the release of 'Razamanaz' that the group finally hit pay day and started to achieve the required degree of success to levitate them 6. MAGNUM Home-grown Birmingham rockers Magnun first hit the rock scene in the mid-1970s but it wasn't until 1985 with the release of the benchmark 'On A Storyteller's Night' album that they finally hit the big time both critically and commercially. The success of the album and its lead 7. ANTHRAX Cutting-edge Metal innovators Anthrax laid down the ground rules for alternative and rap-rock. A definitive rock anthem 'Madhouse' first appeared on the group's definitive 1985 release 'Spreading The Disease' their first to feature vocalist Joey Belladonna. Recently 'reformed and reunited' with the singer (after a brief flirtation with ex-Armored Saint crooner John Bush) Anthrax continue to lay down their Metal law at rock festivals worldwide. 8. STATUS QUO Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-lived rock acts having been together now for almost 40 years. In the UK the band have racked up a record string of Top 10 hit singles despite the fact that in America the group were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy 9. BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST Absolutely massive in Germany but ignored to a large degree in the UK, British prog pioneers Barclay James Harvest were a group of solid musicians with a knack for writing 'catchy' rock songs. Founding members Les Holroyd (bass) and John Lees (guitar) split in the late 10. THE NICE The brainchild of keyboard maestro Keith Emerson, Sixties act The Nice were the psychedelic forerunners for the Seventies progressive 'excessive' exploitation's of progressive rock supergroup Emerson Lake & Palmer. Released as a single in 1967, the brash 'America' soon became the group's trademark musical signature much akin to ELP's later classic 'Fanfare For The Common Man'. 11. TESTAMENT San Francisco thrash metallers Testament gave the fledgling Metallica a good run for their money back in the mid 1980s but never actually managed to reach the same platinum pinnacle as the Metalli men. Still very much a veteran 'underground' attraction they still continue to demonstrate an uncanny ability for writing 'heavy' hook-laden rock songs with a plethora of recent releases. 12. DIAMOND HEAD A rock classic if ever there was one. When Diamond Head hit the rock scene in the early 1980s they were hailed as the 'new' Led Zeppelin. The seminal 'Am I Evil?' went on to be a true rock anthem in the Nineties when rock giants Metallica took the bull by the horns and paid tribute to their musical heroes, frequently including it in their live set and laying it down on tape on their 1998 covers album 'Garage Inc.'. 13. ASIA An amalgam of rock's finest, Eighties supergroup Asia took the States by storm in 1982 with their self-titled debut album. 'Sole Survivor' (one of three hit singles) cut it fine in the US singles charts and earned them superstar status. This epic live version was recorded live 14. BERNIE MARSDEN Something of a musical journeyman, former Whitesnake guitar-man Bernie Marsden made a mark for himself in the early 1980s incarnation of David Coverdale's hard rockin' heroes before turning his hand to fronting his own band (Alaska). In more recent years he's settled down, exploring a rootsy blues based direction with a batch of superb solo albums 15. GIRLSCHOOL (HEADGIRL) At the peak of their popularity in 1981, female 'New Wave Of British Heavy Metal' stars Girlschool teamed up with Lemmy & Co. (Motorhead) for 'The St. Valentines Day Massacre EP', a hit collaboration which saw the 'band' perform alongside their male partners in 'rhyme' (under the moniker Headgirl) on 'Top Of The Pops' with the EP's lead cut, the bristling rocker 'Please Don't Touch'. CD 2 1. FREE Paul Rodgers and company were cited as the 'new Stones' when 'All Right Now' hit the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic in 1970. Their blues derived rock could well have earned them a better place in the history books if guitarist Paul Kossoff had not met an untimely end. That said besides having a had burgeoning solo career Rodgers also went on to front Bad Company, The Firm (with Jimmy Page) and more recently Queen. 2. GARY MOORE Relocating to Los Angeles after 'unexpectedly' leaving Thin Lizzy in 1979, Gary Moore formed G-Force, a new hard rock outfit to slog it out with the best of them. Jumping on the N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) bandwagon the group proved dangerous and exciting most notably in the live environment. Standout tracks such as 'White 3. ALICE COOPER Conceptually the third installment of a trilogy initiated on 'The Last Temptation' (1994), and continued on 'Brutal Planet' (2000), Alice Cooper's 'Dragontown' (2001) sees the dark prince of rock paying tribute to some of his musical icons. With its Beatle-style harmonies 'It's Much Too Late' (a song written about the late John Lennon) showcases the Metal legend's personal irreverence and distaste towards 'organised' religion. 4. MOTORHEAD Fronted by the 'iconic' Lemmy, Metal legends Motorhead have always been a law unto themselves. Released in 1979, the band's second album 'Bomber' definitely took no prisoners. Inspired by a book of the same name by WW2 author Len Deighton, the album cover instigated the use of an innovative lighting rig featuring a Heinkel III German bomber which literally 'flew' over the stage. 5. IAN GILLAN Adorned by a striking photo portrait, 1991's 'Toolbox' was arguably the singer's most rocking solo collection of songs. Featuring dynamic hard rock aces such as 'Hang Me Out To Dry', it was dubbed by the press as his 'hardest album ever' and compared admirably with the classic Purple recordings of the early 1970s, marrying a sharp straight-ahead rock 'n' roll edge with an offbeat sense of personal humour. 6. HANOI ROCKS When they first appeared in 1981, all hair and glam, Finish rockers Hanoi Rocks created the equivalent of an earthquake in Heavy Metal circles. This the title track of their fourth album was produced by the Mott The Hoople team of Dave Buffin Griffin and Pete 'Overend' Watts. A pretty explosive affair powerfully combining the spirit of Seventies glam with the more Metallic values of the early Eighties. 7. UFO Blistering 'new version' of the legendary UFO track which originally featured on the group's 1974's album of the same name and made its mark in rock lore on 1979's 'Strangers In The Night' live album. When the classic line-up of the band Mogg/ Way/ Schenker/ Parker/ Raymond) reformed in the mid-1990s to record a brand new opus they reworked a number of 8. RED DOGS Formed in 1989 British bar room rock 'n' rollers The Red Dogs made two critically acclaimed albums (1990's 'Wrong Side Of Town' and 1992's 'Working Late') before eventually calling it a day. Featuring the pairing of singer Mickey Ripley and rip roarin' guitar-slinger Paul Guerin the 'Dogs sassy brand of bluesy ballsy rock had all the girls swooning at the knees in rock clubs up and down the country. 9. PROCOL HARUM One of the biggest success stories of the late 1960s, Procol Harum are probably best remembered for their monster hit 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale'. The group under the guidance of frontman Gary Brooker developed a distinctive 'soulful' sound that (after briefly disbanding in the late 1970s and reforming in the early 1990s) continues to earn them a successful innings on the live circuit today. 10. ALASKA When ex Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden formed Alaska in 1981 he hoped his band would emulate the success of such AOR rock giants as Journey and Foreigner. A shift from the blues soaked rock of his former band, Alaska seemed to be more of a 'in vogue' commercial proposition across the Atlantic. However, without a major label deal the songs on 11. JOHN WETTON Having cut his teeth with such rock luminaries like King Crimson, Uriah Heep and Roxy Music, bassist/vocalist John Wetton found fame and fortune in the early 1980s with rock supergroup Asia. A workmanlike solo career followed which saw the singer/songwriter relocating to America to co-write songs for the likes of Cher. Back again in Blighty, 12. ANGEL WITCH One of the 'hottest' of N.W.O.B.H.M. acts, London lads Angel Witch took their inspiration from the earthy 'occult' Metal of Black Sabbath, but turned up the speed to accelerate their own musical values. With a huge 'underground' hardcore following the band's debut album (which was melodic, intense and forceful) provided the right ingredients to put them on a pedestal with the likes of the fledgling Iron Maiden. 13. DIO Still wrapped in his Medieval garb former Rainbow/Black Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio continues to fly the traditional Heavy Metal flag. Chock full of rocking Metal guitar riffs (courtesy of recent recruit Doug Aldrich) 'Killing The Dragon' (like its illustrious Eighties 14. VENOM Having shook the Metal world to its roots with their stunning debut album 'Welcome To Hell' (1981) (which combined the pure power of Motorhead with the visual intensity of Kiss), Newcastle thrash heavyweights Venom spread their visceral wings on 1982's follow-up 15. CAMEL 'Never Let Go' Under the direction of band leaders Andy Latimer (guitar) and the late Peter Bardens (keyboards), art improvisationalists Camel forged a loyal 'cultivated' cult following throughout the Seventies/Eighties and Nineties. Their eponymous 1973 debut ultimately set their signature sound, a sonic celebration of soaring guitar-work set against sweeping organs and jazz-infused rhythms. Mark Crampton ------------------
Essential Metal Anthems Track List
1. MOTÖRHEAD - Ace Of Spades Creators of an aggressive, anti-social, gutsy grind played at overwhelmingly painful ear-shredding volume, Motörhead were the first Metal band to harness the charismatic energy of punk rock. The original Motörhead trio of Lemmy Kilmister (bass/vocals), Fast Eddie Clarke (guitar), and Philthy Animal Taylor (drums) set standards in high decibel volume. This landmark track established them as the UK's premier Metal attraction. 2. URIAH HEEP - Easy Livin' Uriah Heep are one of Britain's longest surviving rock bands. Their fourth opus 'Demons And Wizards' (regarded by many fans as their best ever record) threw up several Heep classics, most notably the anthemic ‘Easy Livin'’, a punchy rock'n'roll dream, tailor-made for lead singer David Byron's extrovert showmanship. It dented charts worldwide and helped to give Uriah Heep their first truly international single success. 3. MICHAEL SCHENKER - Armed & Ready (live) Having cut his teeth with German Metal stars The Scorpions and British rock legends UFO in the Seventies, Teutonic guitar god Michael Schenker stepped out into his own solo spotlight in the 1980s fronting his own band M.S.G.. The master of the Flying V frequently topped guitarists readers' polls coming up trumps over established 'heroes' such as Ritchie Blackmore, Angus Young, Alex Lifeson and Gary Moore. 4. GIRLSCHOOL - Race With The Devil Helping to spearhead the N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal), all-girl group Girlschool caused quite a commotion on the heavily male dominated music scene in the early 1980s. On par with masculine contemporaries Motörhead with whom they shared the same record label (Bronze) these grungy metallic goddesses notably distinguished themselves courtesy of an aggressive, ballsy hard rock sound. 5. ALICE COOPER - Backyard Brawl Out to shock the PC brigade with his androgynous on-stage personality Alice Cooper, the tasteful master of the macabre has always had the authorities up in arms because of his gory onstage antics featuring pioneering props such as electric chairs, fake blood, snakes and guillotines. Culled from one of his most recent long-players this irreverent rootsy rocker proves that Alice cuts deep to the bone and still grabs you by the throat. 6. MAGNUM - Sacred Hour Veteran Brummie rockers Magnum have a long lasting musical pedigree. The original Seventies Magnum line-up consisted of guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin, vocalist Bob Catley, bassist 'Wally' Lowe, keyboardist/flutist Richard Bailey, and drummer Kex Gorin. When keyboardist Mark Stanway joined the band in the early 1980s they went on to deliver this all time rock classic which has since become the group's live swansong. 7. DIO - Stand Up And Shout (live) Still attired in his medieval garb former Rainbow/Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio continues to fly the Heavy Metal flag. A profound storyteller living in a world of castles and stargazing wizards, he formed his own band Dio in the mid-1980s. On the back of 1983's classic opus 'Holy Diver', Dio would subsequently go on to take the rock world by storm with an over-the-top stage show featuring lasers, explosions and a life-size dragon. 8. HANOI ROCKS - Tragedy Scandinavia's major export to the world of Hard Rock, Finnish group Hanoi Rocks drew much of their sound and inspiration from the Glam rock scene of the 1970s with an image very reminiscent of the New York Dolls. Hanoi's brand of sassy, sleazy rock 'n' roll gained tabloid applause in the early 1980s. Their debut album 'Bangkok Shocks Saigon Shakes', released in 1981 was musically more R&B than traditional HM. 9. DEEP PURPLE - Ted The Mechanic (live) When legendary guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore finally quit Deep Purple in the mid 1990s it seemed the writing was finally on the wall for the band. However the remaining original Mk 2 members (Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice) quickly recruited ex Dixie Dreggs guitarman Steve Morse to the fold and have since delivered a host of hard hitting studio and live albums. The rollicking rocker 'Ted The Mechanic' showcases Morse's ability to the full. 10. NAZARETH - Expect No Mercy Formed in 1968, braveheart rockers Nazareth had a host of hit singles in the 1970s. Featuring vocalist Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew and drummer Darrell Sweet, the Scottish quartet made a name for themselves on the live circuit. One of their best album cuts, the aptly named title track from 1977's studio opus 'Expect No Mercy', quickly became a perennial live favourite with rock fans worldwide. 11. THUNDER - Pilot Of My Dreams Bluesy prime groovers Thunder followed, and continue to follow to fly the flag for traditional Brit rock. Inspired by the likes of Free and Bad Company, guitarist Luke Morley and vocalist Danny Bowes initially started playing together as school mates, cementing their songwriting potential with London locals Terraplane before forming Thunder, successfully re-establishing trademark hard rock virtues with a host of hit singles and sold out tours. 12. ALASKA - Headlines When former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden formed Alaska in 1981 he hoped his band would emulate the success of such rock giants as Journey and Foreigner. A shift from the blues-soaked rock of the Snakes, Alaska seemed to be more of an in vogue commercial proposition. Taking more of an AOR direction, they made two solid rock albums; 'Heart Of The Storm' (1984) and 'The Pack' (1985), then sadly broke up. 13. RAGE - Prayers Of Steel Led by longtime lead singer/bassist Peter 'Peavey' Wagner, German Heavy Metal outfit Rage originally formed in the early 1980s and issued records consistently throughout the 1990s. Initially calling themselves 'Avenger' the group issued a number of definitive albums displaying their own unique brand of hard hitting rock, before changing their name to Rage to avoid confusion with a British rock outfit of the same name. 14. GARY MOORE - Nuclear Attack Belfast born Gary Moore first achieved renown as the lead guitarist of hard rock legends Thin Lizzy. However, in the middle of the band's 1979 American tour, Moore acrimoniously left the group to go solo. He formed his own outfit G-Force and also cut a solo album 'Dirty Fingers' on which he delivered a superb performance both vocally and instrumentally, mixing traditional hard rock standards with a masterful melodic rock style. 15. DIAMOND HEAD - Am I Evil? (live) A rock classic if ever there was one. When Diamond Head hit the rock scene in the early 1980s they were hailed as the New Led Zeppelin. The seminal 'Am I Evil?' went on to become a true rock anthem in the Nineties when rock giants Metallica took the bull by the horns and paid tribute to their musical heroes, frequently including it in their live sets and laying it down on tape on their 1998 covers album 'Garage Inc.'. CD 2 1. ANTHRAX - Indians Emerging from the Thrash explosion of the mid-1980s, New York metallers Anthrax are one of the most innovative and successful bands in Hard Rock history, selling millions of albums and filling concert halls around the world. Unlike heavyweight Thrash contemporaries such as the 'mighty' Metallica, Anthrax had the good sense to temper their often serious music with a healthy dose of fun and good-hearted humour. 2. HANOI ROCKS - Back To Mystery City When they first appeared in 1981, all hair and glam, Finnish rockers Hanoi Rocks created the equivalent of a musical earthquake in Heavy Metal circles. This the title track of their fourth long-player was produced by the Mott The Hoople team of Dave ‘Buffy’ Griffin and Pete 'Overend' Watts. It was an explosive affair powerfully combining the spirit of Seventies glam with the more commercial Metallic values of the early Eighties. 3. DIO - Holy Diver After recording a number of high profile studio albums with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, singer Ronnie James Dio made the break to form his own band with guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Vinnie Appice. They had an instant hit with 1983's debut album 'Holy Diver' a consistent classic that set the agenda for future releases. Its hypnotically epic title track is regarded as one of Dio's best efforts. 4. IAN GILLAN - Hang Me Out To Dry Adorned by a striking photo portrait, 1991's Toolbox was arguably Ian Gillan's most rocking solo collection of songs outside Deep Purple. Featuring dynamic hard rock aces such as 'Hang Me Out To Dry', it was dubbed by the press as his “hardest album ever” and compared admirably with the classic Purple recordings of the early 1970s, marrying a sharp straight-ahead rock 'n' roll edge with an offbeat sense of personal humour. 5. MOTÖRHEAD - Bomber Fronted by the iconic Lemmy, Metal legends Motörhead have always been a law unto themselves. Released in 1979, the band's second album 'Bomber' definitely took no prisoners with its rough and ready sound. Inspired by a book of the same name by WW2 author Len Deighton, the album cover instigated the use of an innovative in-concert lighting rig featuring a mock-up of a Heinkel III German bomber which literally 'flew' over the stage. 6. UFO - Doctor Doctor Vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way and drummer Andy Parker formed veteran Brit rockers UFO in 1969. Originally known as Hocus Pocus, the group which took its name from a London club, went through a myriad of line-up changes following the departure of Michael Schenker in the late 1970s. Guitarmen such as Paul Chapman, Atomic Tommy and Lawrence Archer followed suit filling the legendary axeman's shoes. 7. SAXON - Wheels Of Steel After almost three decades in the business, numerous album releases and many hundreds of thousands of road miles covered, Saxon's relentless bent for serving up well crafted 1980s style hard rock has gained them one of the most endearing and well earned reputations in Heavy Metal. Affectionately known as the 'Barnsley Big Teasers', their popularity soared with the release of the Top 10 album Wheels Of Steel in 1980. 8. SKID ROW - Swallow Me (The Real You) Mainstream Metal act Skid Row took the music world by storm in the late 1980s with their 'original' poppy brand of riffing rock first showcased on the group's mega-selling self-titled debut. However with the onset of Grunge in the early 1990s, the band's sound became more aggressive. Reuniting without original singer Sebastian Bach (replaced by Johnny Solinger) the group recently delivered a killer opus in the shape of 2003's Thickskin. 9. ALICE COOPER - Brutal Planet Renowned for his gory onstage antics Seventies rock superstar Alice Cooper represented the voice of a generation who were sick of pushing pencils. Following the commercial highs of 1989's classic Trash and its Nineties siblings, Brutal Planet proved to be a sizzling revitalised hard rockin' guitar laden collection of songs as Alice once again took the bull by the horns and got down to the business of being 'mean and moody'. 10. GARY MOORE - White Knuckles/Rockin' And Rollin' Relocating to Los Angeles after unexpectedly leaving Thin Lizzy in 1979, Gary Moore formed G-Force, a new hard rock outfit to slog it out with the best of them. Jumping on the N.W.O.B.H.M. (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) bandwagon the group proved dangerous and exciting most notably in the live environment. Standout tracks such as 'White Knuckles/Rockin' And Rollin'' laid down Moore's rock credentials in fine detail. 11. VIXEN - Never Say Never Hailed as the maiden answer to Bon Jovi, female commercial rockers Vixen cut to the bone with their bare-chested brand of sassy, slick hard rock. Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 and fronted by the luscious Janet Gardner the fiery foxes chalked up millions of album sales during the late 1980s. Reforming again in 1998 they revitalised their rock 'n' roll credentials with a more mature sound. 12. TESTAMENT - Eyes Of Wrath San Francisco thrash Metallers Testament gave the fledgling Metallica a good run for their money back in the mid 1980s but never actually managed to reach the same platinum pinnacle as the Metallic men. Still very much a veteran underground attraction they continue to demonstrate an uncanny ability for writing heavy hook-laden rock songs with a plethora of recent releases. 13. HEADGIRL - Please Don't Touch At the peak of their popularity in 1981, female New Wave Of British Heavy Metal stars Girlschool teamed up with Lemmy & Co. (Motörhead) for 'The St. Valentines Day Massacre EP', a hit collaboration which saw the 'band' perform alongside their male partners in 'rhyme' (under the moniker Headgirl) on 'Top Of The Pops' with the EP's lead cut, the bristling rocker 'Please Don't Touch'. 14. DEEP PURPLE - Smoke On The Water Who hasn't tried playing this familiar riff. Simple but effective this tune, always a live favourite at any show, made the Mark II line-up of Deep Purple (Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice) living rock legends. Having been first put to tape on Machine Head (1972) and made immortal on Made In Japan (1972), Smoke On The Water finally got the full blown orchestral treatment on Live At The Royal Albert Hall (2000). CD 3 1. THE ALMIGHTY - Do You Understand? Drawing their inspiration from respected acts such as Motörhead, The Cult, and The Ramones, bike'n'bird rockers The Almighty spearheaded a British Hard Rock revival (alongside bands such as The Wildhearts and Thunder) in the early 1990s. Fronted by vocalist/guitarman Ricky Warwick they took no prisoners with their no nonsense brand of Metal proving a popular live attraction in the UK. 2. NAZARETH - Hair Of The Dog Self-produced by guitarist Manny Charlton, Nazareth's fifth studio opus 'Hair Of The Dog' confirmed the Scots rockers as a major global attraction (chalking up double platinum sales in the US). A defining hard rock record Hair Of The Dog went on to influence Eighties rock icons Guns 'N' Roses who laid down their own version of the title track for a covers album entitled The Spaghetti Incident. 3. UFO - Let It Roll Blistering live version of the legendary UFO track which originally featured on the group's 1975 opus Force It and made its mark in rock folklore on 1979's live album Strangers In The Night. When the band reunited with veteran guitar hero Michael Schenker for the Covenant album in 2000 they added an extra in-concert disc for the fans featuring a number of old band favourites. 4. ALASKA - S.O.S. British Hard Rock unit that was the phoenix which rose from the ashes of Bernie Marsden's short-lived S.O.S. band. In the studio and on record Robert Hawthorn's vocals contrasted subtly with the former Whitesnake man's famous blues influenced guitar style. However, without a major label deal the songs never really got the chance to compete with the big guns of rock. 5. ANTHRAX - Bring The Noise Anthrax's experiment with Rap and Hip-Hop music (something unheard of in Metal circles) resulted in a fine collaboration with Public Enemy in 1991 for a joint re-recording of PE's 'Bring The Noise'. Long-time band friends Chuck D. and Flavor Fav joined the group in recording the track and video, resulting in a bombastic, boundary-shattering rock classic. 6. MAGNUM - Long Days Black Nights Led by guitar/songsmith Tony Clarkin, home-grown Birmingham rockers Magnun first hit the rock scene in the mid-1970s having signed to Jet Records, but it wasn't until the late 1980s that they finally hit the big time both critically and commercially when they landed a major label deal with Polydor Records. Although the band are practically unheard of in the United States, they still continue to have a respectable following in Europe. 7. WOLFSBANE - Kathy Wilson (live) Tamworth noise-mongers Wolfsbane gave their American cousins a good run for their money back in the late 1980s. With their explosive Heavy Metal-handed party time attitude they were definitely out to take on the world. It's no wonder that when Bruce Dickinson departed Metal legends Iron Maiden back in 1994 the mighty Maidens turned to 'bane crooner Blaze Bailey as his replacement. 8. BRONZ - Send Down An Angel A very credible slice of Eighties Heavy Metal 'Taken by Storm' was the one and only album to be cut by Bath rockers Bronz. Initially launched to make a commercial breakthrough in the US market by Gerry Bron's famous Bronze record label (home to the likes of Motörhead and Uriah Heep) the quintet's brand of gutsy, intelligently structured rock was definitely well oiled to make the grade. 9. URIAH HEEP - The Wizard Uriah Heep's trademark traditional heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early 1970s. Formed by vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box in the late 1960s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades (nearly 30 different musicians have passed through the band's ranks over the years). They continue to release records today. 10. IAN GILLAN - Talking To You Mention the name Ian Gillan and the name Deep Purple immediately springs to mind. His lengthy, long-flowing hair, crazed conga-playing, and soaring classic rock voice, have always personified the Seventies hard rock supergroup. A much underrated effort, Naked Thunder pulled no punches. The hard rock legend, battered but not bruised, was out to impress having just jumped off the Deep Purple 'Mk 2' reunion gravy train. 11. LITA FORD - What Do You Know About Love Former Runaways star Lita Ford went out 'hell for leather' when she took the solo route in 1983 and firmly set her sights on asserting herself as a true rock 'n' roll goddess. Out to outdo her male Metal contemporaries she earned the hits she'd been looking for at the tail end of the Eighties and by 1991's Dangerous Curves had established herself as Metal's premier pin-up. 12. VARDIS - 100 mph New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (N.W.O.B.H.M.) power trio Vardis was the brainchild of 'Fireball XL5' fan Steve Zodiac. Cited by the music press as Heavy Metal's answer to boogie blues superstars Status Quo (courtesy of an effervescent live show) they quickly built up a substantial loyal live following. Their debut album 100 MPH delivered something of a sucker punch to say the least. 13. DIAMOND HEAD - Home Back in the early 1980s, Diamond Head were hailed by Kerrang magazine as the new Led Zeppelin. One of the leading lights of the N.W.O.B.H.M the quartet took the genre by storm with epic releases such as Borrowed Time and Canterbury. A big influence on later Metal giants such as Metallica they reformed in 1996 to record an album and appear on the Donington Monsters Of Rock festival bill. 14. PAUL DIANNO - Running Free Original Iron Maiden singer Paul Dianno made his mark with the British Metal legends on their first two albums (Iron Maiden and Killers) before being replaced by 'siren screamer' Bruce Dickinson in 1982. Playing very much to his laurels he has since carved a firm niche for himself as a solo artist courtesy of a stunning live show that trades very much on classic early Maiden numbers. 15 GIRLSCHOOL - C'mon Let's Go Featuring the nucleus of bassist Enid Williams, vocalist/guitarist Kim McAuliffe, South London act Girlschool were one of the first all-female bands to take on the big beasts of Heavy Metal. One of the standout cuts from the group's second album, 1981's Hit And Run, the riff revving 'C'mon Let's Go' displayed enough intensity and raw aggression to prove that the these ladies were definitely not for turning. 16. COMPANY OF SNAKES - Here I Go Again Guitarists Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody along with bassist Neil Murray were an integral part of the early line-up of rock legends Whitesnake. In 1999 they reunited as Company Of Snakes alongside vocalist Stefan Bergren, keyboardist Don Airey and drummer John Lingwood. The ensuing live album 'Here They Go Again' set out to capture the blues spirit of the early classic 'snake sound. Notes by Mark Crampton Ich zahl'
