Vinnie Moore - Baby Blue
Due for Release in January 2008
The unfortunate souls given the almost impossible job of following such great performances from SAXON and TWISTED SISTER were UFO. As per usual Phil Mogg and Pete Way looked like they were on a different planet, but considering the late time of their show, they were surprisingly spot on with their performance. Also, on great form as ever was American guitraist Vinnie Moore, who is more than capable of playing the Michael Schenker material, adding his own touch of smoothness to every song. Speaking of smooth, the ballads 'Love to Love' and 'Baby Blue' were a nice change from the thundering metal that had drained almost every last drop of energy out of the audience.
The UFO set was roughly an hour and included classics such as 'Rock Bottom' and 'Doctor Doctor' - alongside impressive newer tracks like 'Watching The Daylight Go To Town'. However, a very disappointing exclusion was 'Lights Out' - usually a staple classic in UFO's set, but strangely not played tonight - perhaps Mogg and Way wrote the setlist together and forgot that the song even existed? After UFO it was indeed lights out for a fair proportion of the crowd who headed back to their apartments, but those that did would have missed an excellent display by TESLA.

• UFO: There was no shame whatever in coming second to Twisted Sister in the showmanship stakes. But Phil Mogg still has a few tricks of his own. "Welcome to an evening of partial live music," exclaimed the singer mischievously, perhaps in the belief that some of the other bands had mimed, or even that the graveyard was soon to beckon for them. Who ever really knows what someone as off the scale as Phil Mogg is likely to be thinking? Content-wise, UFO's 'Strangers In The Night'-based set is in major need of an overhaul, but they remain one of the most charismatic and consistent groups on the circuit. UPDATE: Following on from this:
Dave Lings Diary Entry Our dear friend 'Dave Ling' has given 'Misty Green and Blue' a mention in last Tuesdays Diary entry Tuesday 20th November Here is my 'nice email response' that Dave referred to that has prompted his entry: Hi Dave You may be interested to visit the Misty Green and Blue tour page, when you find a spare moment: http://www.beatsworking.tv/UFO/russia2007Tour.html You have created somewhat of a debate as so many people sent me e-mails regarding the UFO set list. You may be interested to know that UFO have played an additional 15 songs that were NOT part of the SITN set list since Vinnie joined the band. On the recent Russian tour, 'Belladonna' (No Heavy Petting) was played - that's 1. Great start :-) The summer tour dates have included 'Lettin' Go' (No Place to Run), 'Hard Being Me' (The Monkey Puzzle), 'When Daylight Goes To Town' (You Are Here), Baby Blue (You Are Here) and Fighting Man (Sharks). The previous brace of gigs at the end of May 2007 included 'Black and Blue' (The Monkey Puzzle) as part of the set-list. The European tour, late 2006 had another two tracks included from the 'Monkey Puzzle' - 'Heavenly Body' and 'Drink Too Much'. The previous year, we had my favourite of all UFO songs, 'The Wild One' (You Are Here), 'Pack It Up and Go' (Obsession) and Mr Freeze' (You Are Here). 2004 Tour - 'Midnight Train' (Covenant), 'Call Me' (You Are Here) and 'Jello Man' (You Are Here) - Phew. Thats half of the 'You are Here' album and four from 'The Monkey Puzzle' as well as tracks from, 'Sharks', 'Covenant', Obsession and 'No Heavy Petting'. I agree that there are many more songs from the Paul Chapman era that UFO can draw from but I am impressed with the fact that UFO have been circulating additional material of 15 non SITN songs performed live since Vinnie joined the band. For a gig like HRH, the choice was to play well known songs as there were a broad range of music lovers. Anyway Dave, Thank you as ever in supporting UFO, I know the boys appreciate it and I hope to catch up with you once again. Take good care Tristan
